Can you tell us about yourself? We're a husband-and-wife team based in Charleston who love a good project. Danny started his business in 2015, and ever since, we've been working on our own 1960's home and bringing other Charleston homes back to life. We live here with our toddler and our dog, and spend our free time on the water, riding our tandem bike, and sharing the process on social media.
Project Type: Full Interior Home Remodel
Location: Charleston, SC
Can you tell us a little bit about the project? This was a full home remodel. The biggest challenge here was working with original floor plan. While relatively open, it lacked the seamless flow suited for modern furniture arrangements and featured a small kitchen.
We removed the original brick fireplace that was placed awkwardly toward the center of the great room and created a new fireplace against the exterior wall featuring our new reclaimed mantel.
What made you want to use a reclaimed mantel? The mantel created a focal point while remaining understated and not seeming too heavy for the space. As home renovators, we strive to make all of our projects embody a distinct and individualized design and a one of a kind mantel fit the bill as opposed to something more commonly seen from a big box store or online retailer.
What was the fireplace mantel install process like? The install was straightforward as we used the optional bracket system. I would suggest making a jig with a scrap piece of wood and have your level handy.
